Reduciendo el desempleo juvenil: ¿el modelo caribeño?

Al parecer, todo luce bien en América Latina y el Caribe. Se ha observado un crecimiento en el Índice de Desarrollo Humano de los países de la región, mismo que ha sido acompañado por una disminución en el desempleo (Figura 1). Según la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT), los niveles de desempleo alcanzados son “históricos”: se encuentran actualmente en su punto más bajo en lo que ha transcurrido del presente siglo y han registrado el nivel más bajo desde 1990, cuando se comenzaron a utilizar los métodos más actuales para calcular el desempleo regional.

Intercambio de experiencias sobre desarrollo entre América Latina y África

Más de 40 ministros de desarrollo social de América Latina y el Caribe y África se reunirán esta semana en Brasilia para examinar la forma en que ambas regiones pueden intercambiar experiencias y aumentar la cooperación para poner fin a la pobreza. El PNUD se enorgullece de ser el facilitador de esta histórica reunión.

Sharing development experience between Latin America and Africa

More than 40 social development ministers from Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa are gathering this week in Brasilia to discuss how both regions can exchange experiences and increase co-operation to end poverty.   The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is proud to be the facilitator of this historic gathering.

It takes place less than a month before the Rio +20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development.  There, world leaders, along with thousands of participants from governments, the private sector, and civil society organisations will gather to discuss how to build a more sustainable future—a crucial challenge for developing and developed countries alike.

It is clear that countries can no longer afford to grow first and try to clean up later. Or grow first and try to become more equitable later.  Growth divorced from advances in human development and without regard for the environment will not sustain advances in human development, and will damage the ecosystems on which life on our planet depends.

Two weeks ago, UNDP’s Africa Human Development Report on food security was launched in Nairobi with the President of Kenya.  Despite sub-Saharan Africa’s significant rates of economic growth, hunger continues to affect nearly a quarter of its population – which adds up to more than the entire population of Brazil (the fifth largest country in the world).

There is much experience to share between Latin America and Africa on the eradication of poverty and hunger, and not least through social protection systems. Social programmes like Brazil’s Bolsa Familia, Chile Solidario and Mexico’s Oportunidades have been widely praised.

This Fifth Ministerial Forum for Development will encourage even greater co-operation between the nations of Latin America and Africa.  South-South co-operation and exchanges highlight development solutions which, adapted to national contexts, can help nations achieve their goals.

Tackling Youth Unemployment: The Caribbean Model?

All looks well in Latin America and the Caribbean. The countries in the region have seen an average growth in their Human Development Indexes, accompanied by a fall in unemployment rates (Figure 1). According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), unemployment rates are “historic”: they are at their lowest point in this century and are the lowest rate recorded since current methods for calculating regional unemployment were introduced in 1990.

Violencia y cohesión social en América Latina

Cada año, más de 200 millones de latinoamericanos son víctimas de algún acto delictivo, siendo las tasas de criminalidad en América Latina las más altas del mundo. Mientras Europa o América del Norte presentan tasas de homicidios dolosos inferiores a 4 por cada 100.000 habitantes, el promedio en el Caribe y en América del Sur sobrepasa los 18, a la vez que el promedio de América Central y México sobrepasa los 25.

Seguridad alimentaria en África

Durante los últimos dos años pasé la mayor parte de mi tiempo coordinando el primer Informe sobre Desarrollo Humano de África, que fue presentado el martes 15 de mayo en Nairobi, Kenia.  El informe se centra en la seguridad alimentaria. Para un gran número de personas en África (unos 220 millones), el hambre es una amenaza diaria y con consecuencias permanentes.

About those young individuals that do not study and do not work

Latin America is into its tenth year of sustained economic growth and poverty has dropped by about 51 million people since 2002.[1] Studies suggest that most poverty and inequality reduction can be explained by rapid and sizeable increases in labor income. One of the paradoxes of economic growth in Latin America is that despite greater educational and labor opportunities, there are strong rates of young individuals that do not study and do not work. This is a phenomenon known as “idle youth” (those that do not study and do not work).
